Today, on Women’s Day, we celebrate the high spirit of some of the most powerful characters of Indian cinema. These women in some of their most memorable characters have shown immense strength of mind and body which have left a mark on the society and have inspired many women. Here are some of the most powerful women characters in Hindi movies.

Let’s begin with one of the most iconic characters of Indian cinema, Radha in Mother India. Primarily she is a mother, but she is one of the strongest characters of Indian cinema. Nargis played a very challenging role in this movie. Despite of being a mother, she treaded on the path of righteousness and killed her son when he became an outlaw.

We have seen Rekha in many strong characters, but her portrayal of a jilted woman who seeks revenge is probably one of the most amazing portrayals. This is the story of a wealthy widow who is presumed dead by her lover and sets out for revenge. This movie directed by Rakesh  Roshan marked a new genre where women are seen as characters who are no longer victims, but gear up for some major revenge. Rekha won the Filmfare award for the Best Actress for this movie.

Smita Patil has ruled the world of parallel cinema with many commanding performances. In one of her iconic characters, Smita played the role of Sonbai who showed us how women in a village in Kutch fight against the tyrannical Subedar [Naseeruddin Shah]. This film Mirch Masala has one of the most memorable climaxes of all times where the women as the symbol of protest throw mirchi or red chillies over the subedar.

Rani Mukherjee has played a number of iconic roles and her portrayal of a fearless daredevil cop Shivani Shivaji Roy in Mardaani is one of the memorable characters in Hindi cinema. Roy is an amazing mix of respect and strength and she single-handedly busts a women trafficking racket. Rani was in a superb form and she showed some amazing grit in this movie.

Most of Madhur Bhandarkar’s films have given some amazing women characters, but who would have thought that a glamorous supermodel can show strength of character? Meghna, a supermodel in Fashion emerged as one of the most iconic characters of Hindi cinema. She bravely accepts her mistakes and fights back against all odds to get her stability and success back.
