5 Must Watch Remakes in Bollywood

Ace film critic Roger Ebert said ‘In literature, it’s called plagiarism. In the movies, it’s homage’. Ebert was talking about film remakes. Bollywood loves taking cues from Hollywood films, rewrite and remake them.

While, a handful films have done better than the original or have done justice to it, but most have been failed attempts. Let’s have a look at some of these endeavours and the kind of attention they garnered:

Satte Pe Satta-Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

At Box-office: Success

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) sweeped a lot of nominations at the Academy Awards, winning one. Satte pe Satta was a remake which released in 1982. This too was a huge success.

Chachi 420 – Mrs Doubtfire

At Box-office – Success

How can we forget Robin Williams’ makeover and performance in Mrs Doubtfire (91993)! Kamal Haasan tried the same formula in Chachi 420 (1997) and it sure matched up to our expectations.

Akele Hum Akele Tum-Kramer vs Kramer

At Box-office – Success

The remake of Meryl Streep-starrrer Kramer vs Kramer was a bold move for Bollywood. Akele Hum Akele Tum featured Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala and was a hit.

Sholay-The Magnificent Seven

At Box-office – Success

“If you are going to remake a film, you may as well remake a classic,”  actor Liv Screiber said

Ramesh Sippy lived up to this and made Sholay which was a remake of The Magnificent Seven, which was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. While the Hollywood film got a lukewarm response, history speaks for Sholay!

Sarkar – The Godfather

At Box-office – Success

No one would have thought that Ramgopal Verma and Amitabh Bachchan could pull off an Indian take of The Godfather. And they did! The film even got a sequel which was not that successful though.

There are many more names to go and we will get back to it shortly. Till then, you can revisit these films and enjoy.
