5 Things you Did not Know about The Sound of Music

It is not difficult to understand that why people still love The Sound of Music; this beautiful film has completed 53 years in 2018. Iconic camerawork, great performances and a beautiful storyline make Sound of Music one of the evergreen classics. Here are 5 things that you might not have known about this movie.

In the opening scene of The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews was seen twirling on the mountaintop. It looks effortless in the movie, but Julie Andrews had to face a tough time during the shoot. It was a cold, rainy day and there was a jet helicopter which kept knocking down Julie. There were quite a few takes before the shot was perfected.

Julie Andrews would have missed her chance in The Sound of Music as Maria. Although Richard Rogers was sure that Julie would be perfect for this role, but she starred in My Fair Lady. Later on, when everyone saw her as Mary Poppins, they were convinced that Julie would be perfect for the role. As far as the story goes, Julia was worried that she would be typecast as a nanny after Mary Poppins, but The Sound of Music became a huge success. And as they say, rest is history.

In the movie Maria fell in love with the children and Georg von Trapp simultaneously. But the real Maria did not fall for the captain as soon as she met him. Rather, Maria wrote in the 1948 memoir, that it was the Captain who proposed to Maria. But she was in love with the children, and so got married to Captain.

Although the main story The Sound of Music was inspired by the biography of Von Trapps, the subplot of the romance of Liesl and Rolf was a figment of imagination. Of all the changes that were done in the movie, this subplot stupefied the Von Trapps. Actually, the eldest child in the family was a son Rupert. When the movie was released, the 54-year old son who was a physician, he was asked repeatedly which one of the Von Trapp children was he. He answered “I’m Liesl”.

It is said that the Von Trapp family after coming to America for nearly a decade toured and sang in almost 100 concerts in that year. On an average, they won $ 1000 for each concert.
