Both Amazon Prime and Netflix are barrelling into the entertainment industry in India; they are investing millions of dollars to produce and develop original Indian series. Amazon Prime Video, the video-on-demand platform is known to produce more than 20 original series in India. As for Netflix, they have also announced seven local series with Sacred Games being the first in the list.
Both the platforms are relying on the fact that the Indian audience is now matured enough to handle a crime thriller, suspense, mystery or an emotional drama with equal ease. The companies have an aggressive marketing strategy and have developed diverse content. Amazon and Netflix realize that it is just not the international content which will grab the attention of the audience; rather emphasis on local content is extremely important.
According to a spokesperson, if viewers had liked The Crown or Narcos, two of the most popular series in Netflix, they will simply love Sacred Games which will feature the Bollywood A-lister Saif Ali Khan. This series will have an international team.
2017 has been a pretty interesting year for both Netflix and Amazon demonstrating a distribution method which is happy to put their money on serious Hollywood stuff. Once they were seen as service providers who did not churn out quality content and promoted only a handful of good things to watch. Now, they are known to serve winners to their audience. A case in point was the Amazon Studios-funded Manchester by the Sea which won a host of important awards like Golden Globe and Oscar in 2017. The Crown, which is one of the most popular series in Netflix definitely deserved the two Golden Globes for Netflix. It has also gone and garnered 91 Emmy nominations.
Another important venture in the pipeline is Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. This film is will cost almost $100 million. The recent movie Bright also stars the original Will Smith which will also cost $ 90 million. Although Bright had lukewarm response, it is proven that Netflix is going on the right track by pushing for original movies. And of course, how can one forget the original Stranger Things?
2018 will be quite different for both Amazon and Netflix; the year will be of original content.
