The biggest event of the year is just round the corner and we are talking about none other than the Oscars. Today we pick one of the movies which have been nominated in the ‘Best Film’ category.
As the Oscar nominations were unveiled, director Greta Gerwig is in a perpetual state of emotional turmoil. She has to be, as her directorial debut, the coming-of-age tale Lady Bird has been nominated in five categories like ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Original Screenplay’ ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’. It is Gerwig’s first Oscar nomination and the visibly excited director is one of the first female directors to be nominated for an Academy Award after Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2010.
Of course Ladybird had a series of setbacks. Greta was snubbed in the ‘Best Director’ category at Golden Globes. This omission drew flaks from all sectors including from Natalie Portman who made it a point to snub everyone on the Globes stage with a comment “here are the all-male nominees’.
The film explores the turbulent relationship between a mother and a teenage daughter. Christine played by Saoirse Ronan keeps fighting her strong-willed opinionated mother, but it seems that she is exactly like her. Laurie Metcalf who plays the mother is a nurse who works tirelessly to keep the family afloat after Ladybird’s father loses his job. This poignant film explores the multi-faceted relationship between the mother and daughter in the changing American economic landscape.
Many who have already watched the movie has said that this movie is the ‘first truly feminist teen movie’. Apart from exploring the relationship between a mother and a daughter, this film also focuses on female bonds and self-determination.
Friday Fans feels that Ladybird has a fair chance in sweeping trophies in all the categories. Our best wishes for this venture.
