One of the lesser-known genres of Bollywood has to be the science fiction. Although Bollywood still has a long way to go to match the standards of Hollywood sci-fi movies, our own Hindi film industry is progressing slowly.
When you talk about sci-fi movies, you simply cannot forget Mr. India. A common man empowered with a wrist watch which has the capacity to make him invisible gets ready to fight the injustice prevalent in society. This movie has been in iconic in many ways. Not only Amrish Puri became a household name with his signature dialogue ‘Mogambo khush hua’, it also showed the sizzling chemistry between Sridevi and Anil Kapoor. A sequel to the movie was planned, but nothing was finalized.
Our very own superhero Krissh has Indian Greek God Hrithik Roshan in double roles. This movie is extra special because for the first time Indian audience could talk about their own desi superhero instead of citing examples of Batman and Superman. Towards the end of the movie there is a fight sequence which takes a live action motion comic, a stylistic approach henceforth not explored in Hindi cinema. Let’s not forget that both Koi Mil Gaya and Krissh 3 are part of this same franchise.
When Hrithik Roshan has donned the cap of superhero, other actors cannot be far behind especially our very own Shahrukh Khan. Both the hero and the villain fight it out in both virtual and the real world in the ambitious project of Ra. One. Shahrukh donned the role of G.One, the superhero who fights with the suave villain Arjun Rampal. And truth be told, in many of the scenes it is almost impossible to take your eyes off handsome Arjun Rampal.
Shankar’s magnum opus Robot was popular for many reasons; Rajnikanth was both the protagonist and the antagonist and you have Aishwarya Rai as the leading lady. The brilliant VFX sequences in the movie made it worth a watch. The script is not so brilliant but the aura of Rajni made up for everything.
The beautiful Priyanka Chopra had delved into the science fiction genre as well. Although Love Story 2050 was a huge flop, it is one of the movies which explored the theme of time travel.
